Also known as waiters or waitresses, restaurant servers have a challenging job that goes well beyond just taking orders and delivering food to patrons. Restaurant servers typically manage multiple tables at once. Depending on the restaurant and the tables, a server’s section could range from one large party to twenty tables at some buffet-style restaurants. Servers are tasked with managing their time well when serving multiple parties to ensure they are all getting good and timely customer service. Furthermore, servers should be very knowledgeable about the menu, wine list and daily specials. They also may carve meats or prepare food tableside, serve wine and handle the payment. Servers typically also have side work, such as preparing silverware or cleaning up their section at the end of a shift.
Being a server may be a summer job for some or a lifelong career for others. The job can be very fast paced and challenging, yet the rewards can be gratifying, particularly sizable tips from happy customers.
